Qanat intercepts your audio or video stream using MPlayer ( http://mplayerhq.hu ). The original streaming format and data is retained so that it can be played later using MPlayer or some other media player. If you're not sure of the file extension then try playing it with MPlayer and it should work out the type of data ;). You could just record what you hear to a tape deck, for example, but doing it the Qanat way means no stream breaks and retention of the original stream quality.

I wrote this to record prerecorded content from the WhiteNoise Radio Show ( follow the link on http://www.daveclarke.com/ ) but it can as easily be used to record ("dump" in MPlayer terminology) live audio and video streams.

INSTALLATION

Copy Qanat.exe somewhere. It is completely self contained. It does not use any registry entries.

USAGE

The MPlayer command line program must be in your system path. In Windows XP Control Panel --> System --> Advanced --> Environment Variables. Edit the System variable path. Add the full path of MPlayer to the end of it, after putting a ";" in. Look at the other path names for examples if you're confused. Future versions of Qanat will have the ability to define the MPlayer location directly.

REQUIREMENTS

MPlayer version 1-0rc1 or later, Windows command line version.
Windows XP SP2. Other Windows operating systems may work, but have not been tested.
An internet connection. The point is that it doesn't have to be fast.. In most circumstances Qanat will be able to record on slow connections on which, usually, the stream would be constantly breaking up.
